India successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 mission on the moon, making it the fourth nation to achieve this feat.
The Chandrayaan-3, which means “moon vehicle” in Hindi and Sanskrit, was launched from the Bay of Bengal last month. The spacecraft, carrying a 60-pound solar-powered rover, will explore the moon’s surface for two weeks. The mission’s objectives include a safe landing on the moon, rover deployment, and scientific experiments, according to the Indian Space Research Organization.
Has India previously sent missions to the moon?
India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008, though not a landing, played a crucial role in discovering lunar water molecules through an impact probe.
In 2019, India attempted another lunar landing with Chandrayaan-2, but contact was lost with the lander just minutes before touchdown. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that while they came close, they need to make further progress in their moon exploration efforts.
So far, only the United States, Russia (as the Soviet Union), and China have successfully landed spacecraft on the moon’s surface.
Why is there a renewed interest in moon exploration?
Presently, there is a new space race focused on the south pole of the moon, involving countries like the United States and India with their Chandrayaan-3 mission. The objective is to establish a presence or gain more knowledge about the moon’s south pole, where ice deposits could potentially serve as a resource for water and fuel for future space exploration endeavors.
