Individual Sentenced for Bicycle-Related Murder Dispute

A man has been sentenced to 21 years in state prison after pleading no contest to fatally shooting a Long Beach resident. The shooting occurred during a confrontation over a bicycle, according to authorities.

Junior Alexander Munguia, now 26, entered a plea of no contest on July 19 for voluntary manslaughter and admitted to personally using a firearm. The incident took place on September 17, 2018, in the 1400 block of Long Beach Boulevard.

The victim, Fernando Rodriguez, 46, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the neck and passed away at a hospital two days later, as per the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner.

During the sentencing, members of the victim’s family expressed their desire for justice. The victim’s mother, Maria, remarked, “I want there to be justice for him because I’m never going to see my son again. I don’t want him to be anywhere near my grandchildren.”

The victim’s widow explained that her children suffered greatly from the loss of their father. She stated, “My children were asleep and the next day they had no father … My children are suffering every day because he is not here.”

One of Rodriguez’s children expressed dissatisfaction with the 21-year sentence, wishing for Munguia to “rot in jail.” The victim’s sister, Ana Rosa, expressed her confusion and stated that she believes the perpetrator has no remorse for his actions.

Mungia’s attorney, Ted Batsakis, acknowledged the tragedy experienced by the victim’s family. Munguia has been in custody since his arrest by Long Beach police detectives, approximately 2 and a half months after the shooting.

Initially charged with murder, Munguia’s charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.
