Charles Martinet, Renowned as the Voice Behind Mario, Decides to Depart from Iconic Role

The Mushroom Kingdom is on the brink of a transformative audio experience. Charles Martinet, renowned as the iconic voice behind Nintendo’s beloved character Mario, with his memorable catchphrases like “It’s a-me, Mario” and the exuberant “woo-hoo,” is gracefully stepping down from the role, according to the company.

Nintendo has announced that Martinet will assume the position of “Mario Ambassador,” as stated in their official statement. In this new capacity, Martinet will continue his globetrotting adventures, engaging with fans across the world.

Expressing their gratitude, Nintendo expressed, “Working with Charles to give life to Mario has been an absolute honor for us.”

Martinet himself took to social media to share the news, exclaiming, “My new Adventure begins! You are all Numba One in my heart! #woohoo !!!!!!”

Since the release of Super Mario 64 in 1996, Martinet has lent his voice to the cheerful Italian plumber, captivating players worldwide. He has also provided his vocal talents to other iconic characters like Mario’s brother and sidekick Luigi, as well as Mario’s arch-nemesis Wario.

Super Mario 64 made a groundbreaking shift to three-dimensional gameplay, revolutionizing the gaming industry. The game, launched on the Nintendo 64 console, allowed players to view Mario from a rear perspective as he embarked on his adventures. Since then, the game has attained cult-like status, and Martinet’s voice has graced numerous other Mario games.

However, it seems Martinet will not be featuring in the upcoming game, “Super Mario Bros. Wonder,” set for release in October, as indicated by his IMDB profile, where he is not listed as the character’s voice.

While Charles Martinet did not voice Mario in this year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” where the role was taken on by Chris Pratt, he did have a small part as the voice of Mario and Luigi’s father.

In a review of the movie, The New York Times pointed out that Pratt, despite not sounding like the Mario from the games, managed to incorporate Martinet’s catchphrases, including “it’s a-me” and “let’s a-go.”

In an interview with CNN in 2017, Martinet revealed that he had no prior knowledge about video games when he “crashed an audition” in 1990. To his surprise, he was instructed to create a voice for the character—an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. Martinet expressed that the character of Mario brings out the best in him.

With Charles Martinet bidding farewell to the iconic voice of Mario, the future of the Mushroom Kingdom’s soundscapes awaits a new chapter, while fans worldwide express their gratitude for the joy he has brought to their gaming experiences.
