Film Industry Actors Support Campaign to Reduce Climate Impact of ‘Celebrity Riders’

In the world of celebrities, extravagant demands are not uncommon. Private jets, police escorts, and luxurious amenities are often requested. George Clooney went as far as installing a hot tub and beach hut next to his trailer, while Rihanna demanded a lavish animal print rug and “icy-blue chiffon” curtains. Even specific types of food, snacks, drinks, and flowers are specified.

However, a group of influential UK stars is now standing against these excessive demands and supporting a campaign to promote sustainability in the film and television industry.

Over 100 actors, including Ben Whishaw, Mark Rylance, and Gemma Arterton, have pledged to consider and reduce the carbon impact of their contract requirements or riders. They recognize that the film industry’s practices are filled with waste and a lack of environmental consciousness, which needs to be challenged and changed.

Paapa Essiedu, one of the supporters, highlights that the current climate crisis is a pressing issue that requires immediate action. He believes that the film industry’s norm of wasteful practices contributes to the damage inflicted on our planet. Mark Rylance agrees, stating that even though they may not be able to do everything, they can still make a difference.

The Green Rider campaign, initiated by the actors’ union Equity, will be officially launched at the Edinburgh international television festival. Equity aims to bring about a cultural shift where status is measured by positive influence rather than climate-damaging perks.

This campaign provides actors with a framework to negotiate better practices within the industry. They can incorporate the green rider into their contracts, insisting on sustainability. Specifically, they can advocate for rejecting private air travel, using electric vehicles or low-carbon train travel, opting for energy-efficient trailers or dressing rooms, and promoting set and costume recycling.

Equity is also in discussions with major production companies such as the BBC, ITV Studios, and Sky Studios to pilot the initiative in upcoming projects.

Leading members of the Equity for a Green New Deal network, Danusia Samal and Will Attenborough, believe that art workers possess immense power to drive change. They cite historical examples such as the boycott of Apartheid and the #MeToo movement as evidence of the impact art can have. They are confident that by joining forces and demanding better practices, the industry can make a significant difference in combating the environmental crisis.

While it’s no secret that some celebrities have made extravagant demands, including Rihanna’s specific preferences for her dressing rooms and Beyoncé’s temperature requirements, there is a growing movement of influential stars who are prioritizing sustainability over luxury.
