According to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, a tragic incident occurred in California, where the owner of a clothing store was shot and killed. The suspect made derogatory comments about a Pride flag displayed outside the store.

The victim, identified as Laura Carleton, the owner of Mag Pi clothing store, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station responded to the shooting report in Cedar Glen, California, on Friday at 5 p.m. local time.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene with a handgun. Authorities later engaged in a confrontation with the suspect, resulting in his death.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect targeted Carleton due to her Pride flag, leading to the incident being classified as a hate crime. The “Today” show has reported on this development. However, San Bernardino officials have not responded to Insider’s requests for comment and confirmation.

Carleton had been displaying a Pride flag outside her store since 2021, as reported by the Washington Post. Whenever someone removed the flag as a form of protest, she would promptly replace it.

Although Carleton did not identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she actively supported and advocated for the community, as stated by the advocacy group Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+ on Instagram.

In remembrance of Carleton, the group has been sharing Instagram stories of individuals flying Pride flags.

Mountain Provisions Cooperative, in a Facebook post, described Carleton as an influential figure in the community, emphasizing her commitment to equality, love, and justice. The co-op mentioned her involvement in opening a Free Store to assist the community after a significant blizzard in the San Bernardino Mountains in February.

Carleton’s legacy will be cherished, and her values will persist through the efforts of those she inspired. Mountain Provisions Cooperative vowed to continue advocating for the principles she stood for.
