Closure of LAUSD Schools in Response to Tropical Storm Hilary

As a result of ongoing heavy rainfall and the potential damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has made the decision to close all campuses on Monday.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho stated that it would be impractical to keep the schools open, given the uncertainty of whether the buildings would sustain damage overnight or if conditions would worsen, making it unsafe for students and staff to reach the campuses.

“Due to our inability to assess the state of the buildings and determine accessibility, it is nearly impossible for us to open,” Carvalho emphasized during a press conference on Sunday.

Carvalho highlighted that some students begin their journey to school as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m., with bus drivers reporting to work as early as 4:30 a.m. Additionally, many district employees live far away from their worksites.

“To ensure the safety of every child and employee of LAUSD, it is prudent to cancel school,” Carvalho remarked.

All athletic activities and third-party events will also be canceled for the day.

While independent charter schools are expected to follow suit and remain closed, Carvalho urged parents to confirm with each individual operator for verification.

Carvalho also announced that the district will establish grab-and-go centers to distribute food to students and families who heavily rely on LAUSD’s food programs. More information regarding the distribution centers will be posted online, and they are expected to be operational by Monday afternoon.

In addition to LAUSD, multiple other school districts, including those in the Santa Clarita Valley, have canceled classes for Monday. This includes the Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.

Furthermore, the Anaheim Union High School District, Anaheim Elementary School District, and Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana have also canceled classes in Orange County. Cal State Fullerton has canceled in-person classes for Monday, but online classes will proceed as scheduled. Cal State Long Beach will shift to virtual operations on Monday, with in-person classes resuming on Tuesday. The University of Southern California will operate normally, with classes for the fall semester commencing as planned on Monday.
