LAUSD Schools Shut Down on Monday in Response to Tropical Storm Hilary

As a result of ongoing heavy rainfall and the potential for overnight damage from Tropical Storm Hilary, the superintendent has announced that all campuses within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will be closed on Monday.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has stated that the district cannot risk keeping campuses open when there is uncertainty about potential overnight damage or if conditions will make it difficult or impossible for students and staff to reach the schools.

Carvalho emphasized the early start times for some students and bus drivers, as well as the long distances many district employees travel to their worksites. Therefore, it is deemed prudent to call off school in order to ensure the safety of all LAUSD students and staff.

All athletic activities and third-party events will also be canceled for the day.

Independent charter schools are expected to follow suit, but parents are encouraged to verify the status of their child’s school with individual operators.

The district will provide a dozen grab-and-go food distribution locations between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, offering three meals for students and their families.

The distribution locations are as follows:

– South East Senior High, 2720 Tweedy Blvd., South Gate

– Linda Esperanza Marquez Senior High, 6361 Cottage St., Huntington Park

– James A Garfield Senior High, 5101 E. Sixth St., Los Angeles

– Panorama Senior High, 8015 Van Nuys Blvd., Panorama City

– Sylmar Charter High School, 13050 Borden Ave., Sylmar

These include the Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.
