LAUSD School Forced to Shut Down Amidst Tropical Storm Hilary

Due to ongoing heavy rainfall and the potential for damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary, all campuses within the Los Angeles Unified School District will be closed on Monday, as announced by Superintendent Alberto Carvalho on Sunday.

Carvalho emphasized that the district cannot risk keeping campuses open when there is uncertainty about potential overnight damage or the ability of students and staff to safely reach the schools in deteriorating weather conditions.

“Considering our inability to assess building conditions and determine accessibility, it is nearly impossible for us to proceed with normal operations,” said Carvalho during a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Carvalho also highlighted the fact that some students start walking to school as early as 5:30 or 6:00 a.m., and certain bus drivers report to work as early as 4:30 a.m. Additionally, many district employees live far from their worksites.

“To ensure the well-being and safety of every student and staff member within LAUSD, it is the prudent decision to cancel school,” he stated.

All athletic activities and third-party events will also be canceled, according to Carvalho.

Although independent charter schools are also expected to be closed, Carvalho advised parents to confirm their status with individual operators.

The district will establish 12 grab-and-go centers to distribute food to students and families who heavily rely on LAUSD food programs. Each student will receive three meals. Additional details will be available online, and these centers are expected to be operational in the afternoon.

LAUSD teachers were asked to provide activities and resources on Schoology by 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Educational resources can also be found at LAUSD.org, and educational programming will be offered by KLCS.

Multiple other school districts, including those in the Santa Clarita Valley, have also canceled classes for Monday. This includes Antelope Valley Union High School District, Anaheim Union High School District, William S. Hart Union High School District, Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, and Sulphur Springs Union School District.

In Orange County, classes on Monday have been canceled in the Anaheim Union High School District and Anaheim Elementary School District. Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana will also be closed.

Cal State Fullerton has canceled in-person classes for Monday, but online classes will proceed as scheduled. Cal State Long Beach will transition to virtual operations on Monday and resume in-person classes on Tuesday.

However, the University of Southern California announced that classes for the fall semester will begin as scheduled on Monday.
