Reflecting on the movie “This Is the End,” Michael Cera shared his experience of being slapped by Rihanna.
In a recent video interview with GQ, Cera discussed various aspects of his past films, including the memorable scene involving Rihanna.
In the film, Cera portrays a fictionalized version of himself at a star-studded housewarming party that coincides with apocalyptic events in Los Angeles.
During the party, Cera playfully smacks Rihanna on the behind, leading her to deliver a real slap across his face. This moment became a highlight of the movie.
Cera commented, “She definitely hit me, but I wanted that. I believe it’s funnier and more believable. A fake slap wouldn’t have looked good, so she hit me hard.”
He added, “Yes, she really sent me flying, and it was a great experience. Now it’s captured on film forever, the pain I endured.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cera mentioned that Rihanna didn’t require much convincing to perform the slap.
“I thought it would look much better if she hit me. It didn’t take much to persuade her,” he said. “I definitely have no regrets! I was into it.”
Seth Rogen, who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, revealed that Rihanna slapped Cera so hard that it affected his balance.
Rogen explained, “In the script, Michael Cera slaps Rihanna’s ass, and in the script, she doesn’t hit him back. But he asked her, ‘Can I slap your ass for real?'”
“She responded, ‘You can slap my ass for real if I can slap you back in the face for real,'” Rogen continued.
According to Rogen, they performed the scene several times before achieving the desired result.
“We did it about three or four times, and on the fourth time, she smacked him so hard that she disoriented him. His equilibrium was affected, and he had to rest in his trailer for around half an hour,” Rogen revealed. “But that’s the take we used in the movie. We didn’t add any sound effects to it.”
More recently, Cera portrayed the character Allan in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film “Barbie.” According to Variety, the movie surpassed $1 billion at the global box office this month.
