Derry City suffered penalty heartbreak for the second time in just a few days as they were knocked out of the FAI Cup. They failed to convert crucial penalties by Michael Duffy and Mark Connolly, ultimately costing them their chance to retain the trophy they won in November of last year.

Both Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic had their fair share of opportunities in a closely contested match. However, it was a goalless draw after extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.

Derry City started the game strongly, but St Pat’s managed to threaten towards the end of the first half. The visitors came close to taking the lead through Conor Carty, but his lob over Brian Maher missed the target.

The best chance of the first half fell to Sam Curtis of St Patrick’s Athletic. A brilliant through ball from Jason McClelland put Curtis in a great position, but his shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Neither team could find the breakthrough in the second half, with limited chances created. Brandon Kavanagh’s cross found Jamie McGonigle, whose header was saved by Pat’s goalkeeper Lyness.

Derry City’s goalkeeper Maher made a crucial save to keep his team in the game. Lonergan’s shot was brilliantly denied by Maher with just 10 minutes remaining.
