In the hit comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, fashion editor Patsy Stone had a humorous preoccupation with Harvey Nichols.

However, in the 1990s, many women – myself included – had a serious relationship with this Knightsbridge emporium.

That was then. Now, after the announcement that boss Manju Malhotra is quitting, I have been pondering why things went so badly wrong at the store that was undeniably once so absolutely fabulous.

In its prime, Harvey Nichols was known for its exquisite window displays and impressive range of accessories, handbags, and beauty products.

It embraced the spirit of the 90s, represented by supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.

However, unlike these iconic models, Harvey Nichols is no longer seen as super.

Despite revenue growth in the latest results for the year up to April 2022, the flagship store and the other 13 stores in the group are still struggling to turn a profit.

The London store, situated on the corner of Sloane Street, is slated to be part of a regeneration scheme that will transform the area into a “green boulevard.”

During a recent visit to the neighborhood, I found myself lacking the enthusiasm to revisit my former shopping haven.

The blame can partly be attributed to the rise of online shopping, which has compelled physical stores to innovate and create unique experiences to entice customers.
