Chris Weidman showcased incredible strength and determination as he completed his fight against Brad Tavares at UFC 292 in Boston, Massachusetts. It is especially remarkable considering the severe leg injury he suffered in 2021 against Uriah Hall.

However, Tavares executed a brilliant game plan and dominated Weidman throughout the match. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 in favor of Tavares, who had his own motivation to fight hard. While Weidman received most of the pre-fight attention, Tavares was determined to represent his home state of Hawaii and uplift the spirits of those affected by the fires in Maui.

Weidman, the former UFC middleweight champion, received a thunderous ovation from the crowd as he entered the cage. The fans at TD Garden chanted “Let’s go Weidman!” in an attempt to inspire him towards a fairytale victory.

However, Weidman’s takedown attempts were unsuccessful, and he was left limping from Tavares’ powerful kicks. The relentless assault on Weidman’s lead leg hindered his mobility, ultimately forcing him to fight from a southpaw stance with his injured right leg in front.

While Weidman managed to defend against most of the kicks aimed at his right leg, Tavares punished his left leg severely. Tavares landed an impressive 41 of 45 significant strikes on Weidman’s leg, while Weidman only managed to connect with two of his three kicks.

Weidman landed a few impactful right hands that excited the crowd but was unable to capitalize on them.

With this loss marking his seventh in his last nine fights, Weidman now faces a significant decision. He is far from being a contender and must contemplate his future in the sport.

While his comeback was truly inspiring and showcased immense willpower and determination, Weidman now must carefully consider his next steps.
