MLS Commissioner Don Garber urges clubs to harness Messi’s impact

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Leagues Cup final between Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC, MLS commissioner Don Garber emphasized that it is the responsibility of individual clubs, rather than the league, to capitalize on Lionel Messi’s presence in the competition.

During a conversation with ESPN’s Luis Miguel Echegaray, Garber touched on various topics, including strategies to build upon the inaugural edition of the tournament.

When asked about how the New York Red Bulls should leverage Messi’s presence when hosting Inter Miami at Red Bull Arena, Garber stated, “The local clubs are accountable for growing their fan base. The league will not dictate their actions when facing visiting teams.”

“If I were a coach, general manager, or club president, and I heard [Union coach] Jim Curtin make similar remarks in Philadelphia, I would respond: ‘Come here and support your team,'” Garber added.

“Although it may be exciting to witness another player donning the pink jersey, it was an opportunity for the Philadelphia Union to make strides towards winning another trophy.

“The league will not enforce such measures. It is ultimately up to our teams.”

In the first edition of the Leagues Cup, Miami emerged as champions, prevailing over Nashville in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Garber commended the positive reception and excitement generated by the tournament.

“In its inaugural year, the Leagues Cup has been a resounding success,” he remarked. “Consider the fact that no other league worldwide has organized a competition bringing together two border-connected professional soccer leagues to determine the ultimate road kings.

“There have been extraordinary matches and tremendous enthusiasm, and this is just the beginning. Imagine what the future holds.”

As with any new tournament, adjustments and modifications are expected. Garber stated that the Leagues Cup would undergo similar changes.

“We need to assess the calendar,” Garber explained. “We must consider how the competition fits in with numerous other events over the next few years. Additionally, we will collaborate with Concacaf to address operational aspects such as officiating, which, in my opinion, received insufficient credit for its quality.

“These are matters we will address in the offseason. I intend to convene with my counterpart, Liga MX president Mikel Arriola, to chart our path forward.”

Garber affirmed that MLS would continue to prioritize not just one player, even someone as exceptional as Messi.

“Our focus lies in the foundation,” he asserted. “It revolves around the core values we embed within our community. It is not solely about witnessing a moment of brilliance from a special player.

“Throughout our league’s history, there have been numerous exceptional players. It is not solely about a single individual. It is about fostering a sense of connection with your club, and perhaps that player can bring something extra special.”
