Orange County Register: Suspect Faces Charges for Fatally Shooting Santa Ana Man

SANTA ANA — Court records reveal that a 29-year-old man who previously committed attempted murder as a teenager has now been charged with a fatal shooting outside a liquor store in Santa Ana.

The individual in question, Manuel Chairezcampos Jr., faces charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon – both classified as felonies. Additionally, he may also receive sentencing enhancements for discharging a firearm causing death and committing an offense while on bail for another alleged crime.

According to court records, Chairezcampos previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder in June 2010, accepting a sentencing enhancement for gang activity related to a shooting incident on October 24, 2008.

Furthermore, Chairezcampos was out on bail due to his recent arrest for driving without a valid license on June 14. He was also charged with being in possession of a firearm while being a felon.

The victim in this case, 29-year-old Jorge Velasquez from Santa Ana, tragically lost his life on Sunday, August 13. The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside a liquor store located at 2734 N. Bristol St., as confirmed by Natalie Garcia, a spokesperson for the Santa Ana Police Department.

During his arraignment held in the jail courtroom of Santa Ana, Chairezcampos chose not to enter a plea. His next arraignment is scheduled for September 1 in the Central Justice Center of Santa Ana.
