The Mullet Showdown: Young Competitors Proudly Show off Their Luxurious Hairstyles at the 2023 US Championships

The mullet, a hairstyle that has been both celebrated and criticized since the 1970s, has experienced a remarkable resurgence in recent years. Children from all over the United States now compete to be named the National Mullet Champ in an annual competition that has been held every summer since its inception in 2020. This year, a six-year-old boy from Pennsylvania, Rory Ehrlich, took home the top prize with his bold mullet, which he affectionately calls “Cheddar Wiz.” Rory received over 16,000 votes, surpassing hundreds of other contestants for the win.

While Rory emerged as the victor, he faced tough competition from other impressive contenders. Greyson Woods from New York, also known as “Baby Joe Dirt,” made it into the Top 25 of the USA Mullet Championships 2023 Kids Division. Photos submitted from all across the country showcased a variety of mullet styles, each with its own unique name. The public had the opportunity to vote for their favorite, while a panel of judges evaluated the mullets based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship.

Second place went to Ezekiel Arita of Hawaii, whose dark mullet, dubbed “Mr. Aloha Mullet,” captured the attention of many. Kamden Cunningham from Pennsylvania took third place with his mullet, affectionately named “The Kammander.” Other notable contenders included Eli Powell from Kansas with his mullet called “Ginger Mane,” and Tristan Bowling from Kentucky, whose lofty hairstyle was aptly named “Hot Rod.” Mason Padilla from California, known as “The Chick Magnet,” secured eighth place in the USA Mullet Championships 2023 Kids Division.

The competition also featured other divisions, including the Kids and Teens contests, as well as the Femulet competition held in May. Additionally, the Men’s Mullet and 55+ Mullet competitions are scheduled for the future. Winners of the contest receive a cash prize, sponsor swag, and a USA Mullet Championships trophy.

Rory Ehrlich, the proud winner of the Kids Division, not only achieved mullet glory but also made a positive impact. He raised over $1,000 to support Jared Allen’s Homes For Wounded Warriors charity, which aids in building accessible and mortgage-free homes for critically injured US Military Veterans. Rory intends to use his $5,000 prize money to buy his older sister an alpaca, showcasing his compassion and generosity.

Rory’s journey to mullet victory began a year ago when he visited the barbershop and decided to grow a mullet because he thought it looked cool. His mother, Airen Ehrlich, revealed that Rory named his mullet “Cheddar Wiz” after his favorite way to order a Philly cheesesteak. Having a father who is a retired Air Force veteran, Rory chose to support Homes For Wounded Warriors with his fundraising efforts.

When Rory learned of his win, he couldn’t contain his excitement. Running around the kitchen, he even knocked over a chair in celebration. CBS News captured his jubilation as he shared his plans to spend his winnings on an alpaca for his sister. However, his mother quickly intervened, putting a halt to his unique gift idea. Rory also expressed his desire to celebrate with a wing night.

The overwhelming support Rory received from his local community and the city of Philadelphia propelled him to victory. Airen Ehrlich expressed her gratitude, stating that the outpouring of votes was beyond words. The competition organizers even had to verify the authenticity of the last-minute votes. Despite his newfound fame, Rory has no intentions of changing his hairstyle and intends to continue rocking the mullet.
