San Francisco Firetruck Involved in Collision with GM’s Cruise Robotaxi, Causing Passenger Injury

By Dana Hull | Bloomberg

A collision occurred between a Cruise robotaxi and a firetruck in San Francisco on Thursday night, resulting in injuries to the vehicle’s passenger.

Cruise, an autonomous-driving subsidiary of General Motors Co., announced the crash through a series of social media posts on Friday.

“One of our cars entered the intersection with a green light and was hit by an emergency vehicle that seemed to be heading towards an emergency scene,” the company stated on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The accident took place in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood shortly after 10 p.m., according to Cruise.

“Our car had one passenger who received treatment at the scene and was transported by ambulance for what we believe to be non-severe injuries,” the company confirmed.

This incident raises questions regarding why the vehicle failed to stop for an emergency vehicle and why it did not notice other traffic while crossing the intersection.

An ABC news video showcased the vehicle involved as a firetruck. The San Francisco Fire Department has not provided a comment yet.

Last week, California’s Public Utilities Commission voted 3 to 1 in favor of allowing Cruise and Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo to expand their operations in San Francisco without a safety driver and charge passengers for it.
