England coach Steve Borthwick laments disrupted match as it deviated from traditional 15 vs 15 format

Before Vunipola was shown a red card for a high tackle on Andrew Porter, England put up a competitive fight, despite facing difficulties.

However, once Vunipola was sent off, Ireland took immediate advantage, securing a 17-3 lead with James Lowe’s try, effectively ending the game early in the second half.

England’s legal advisor attended the post-match press conference, where the head coach was cautious in his remarks to avoid worsening the situation. With uncertainties surrounding Owen Farrell’s status, England cannot afford to compound the Vunipola incident ahead of their World Cup opener against Argentina.

“I cannot comment on the incident as it is subject to a disciplinary process next week. We feel the disappointment in the game as every England fan does,” Borthwick stated.

“It is crucial to have 15 players on the field for the entire 80 minutes of every game. Playing against the top-ranked team in the world, in their stadium, becomes an exceedingly difficult task when reduced to 14 men,” he added.

When asked if this would be a recurring issue for the team, considering two players facing similar charges, Borthwick responded, “We have emphasized the importance of proper tackling techniques and player welfare. That remains our approach.”

“In terms of progress, we have seen some development, but there is still room for improvement, particularly in converting opportunities in the final third. We aim to make further progress as we prepare for the World Cup,” Borthwick explained.

Expressing disappointment, Borthwick said, “I share the feelings of every England supporter. We strive to win games and make winning a habit.”

“Ideally, we want 15 players on the field. While I have not reviewed the specific incident involving Billy, we remain committed to our coaching principles and desired outcomes in tackling,” he asserted.

(Regarding the game) “With 14 men against Ireland, it becomes very difficult. The result at halftime was incredibly disappointing. Despite the loss, the players fought passionately until the end. Initially, when it was 15 vs 15 against a formidable Ireland side, the game was closely contested. Unfortunately, it did not stay that way,” Borthwick concluded.
