The World Athletics Championships brought heartbreak for the Netherlands as two of their gold medal favorites stumbled just meters from the finish line.
On the opening day of the Championships in Budapest, the Europeans were hopeful for a successful night. However, disaster struck for two of their favorites.
Double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and Femke Bol, both representing the Netherlands, appeared to have secured gold medals in their respective races. However, they both fell in heartbreaking circumstances.
First, in the 10,000km final, Hassan, the favorite, had a comfortable lead until stumbling in the last 25m.
