Palm Springs International Airport officials have implemented proactive measures to ensure passenger safety and minimize disruptions in anticipation of the impending storm.
While the exact number of canceled or delayed flights is difficult to predict, Daniel Meier, the airport’s deputy director of aviation, marketing and air service development, expects several flight disruptions in the coming days.
Southwest Airlines has already announced the cancellation of all flights to and from PSP until Monday morning. Passengers are advised to contact Southwest for re-booking options.
Although Hurricane Hilary has weakened to a tropical storm, it still poses a threat to Southern California with heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for flooding on Sunday and Monday. There may also be some precipitation on Saturday.
To ensure preparedness, Palm Springs Airport conducted tests on backup systems, increased staffing levels, and has standby generators in case of power outages. Additionally, efforts have been made to clear storm drains and roads in anticipation of potential floods.
Sandbags have been strategically placed around the airport for added protection.
The airport management is working closely with the Palm Springs Fire Department, Palm Springs Police Department, and city leaders to coordinate their response to the storm.
