Male Former Student and Female Teacher Settle Suit Against LAUSD

A recent lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District, filed on behalf of a teenager who claimed to have been molested by a teacher at an East Los Angeles high school in 2017-18, has resulted in a tentative settlement.

Attorneys representing the plaintiff submitted court documents to Judge Christopher K. Lui of the Los Angeles Superior Court, informing him of a “conditional” agreement. A request for dismissal will be filed by November 1, although specific details of the settlement have not been disclosed. Consequently, the trial scheduled for September 5 has been canceled.

An earlier settlement was reported by both parties in May 2022. However, they later informed Judge Lui in December that the settlement had not been finalized by the Board of Education, prompting them to proceed with discovery and a trial.

The plaintiff, referred to as G.L in the complaint filed in July 2019, is now 20 years old. The complaint alleged sexual harassment, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

In 2018, following the arrest of the teacher, Gina Murry, the district released a statement expressing concern over the allegations, which were described as “disturbing” and undermining the district’s commitment to providing a safe learning environment for all students.

In response, the LAUSD lawyers stated in their court papers that the district had no prior knowledge of Murry’s inclination to harm students.

Murry, who was 34 at the time and a co-defendant in the lawsuit along with the LAUSD, was employed at the East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy at Esteban E. Torres High School. In November 2019, she pleaded no contest to one count each of lewd acts upon a child and oral copulation of a person under 16. Two months later, she received a two-year prison sentence.

The lawsuit alleged that Murry abused the plaintiff from August 2017 to June 2018, starting when the plaintiff was 15 years old. The complaint claimed that after the plaintiff experienced bullying during their freshman year, the school principal assigned them to Murry, who groomed them by offering special treatment, such as gifts and playing video games together.

According to the complaint, Murry sexually abused the plaintiff in her personal vehicle and in a tent during an overnight field trip to a local university. The lawsuit also claimed that Murry molested the teen on multiple occasions, often on school grounds and during school-sanctioned events.
