FIBA World Cup Exhibition: USA Basketball Triumphs Over Puerto Rico

LAS VEGAS — USA Basketball faced a moment of tension in the third quarter of its first FIBA World Cup exhibition on Monday night. Jaren Jackson Jr., the NBA’s reigning defensive player of the year, picked up his third foul early in the half, leaving the Americans without their defensive captain. However, instead of faltering, Jackson’s teammates responded with a dominant third-quarter performance that ultimately led to a 117-74 victory.

Coach Steve Kerr has built a team that focuses on strategy rather than star power, emphasizing ball movement, smart decision-making, rebounding, and disciplined defense. The Americans executed this game plan successfully against Puerto Rico, resulting in a methodical victory where each player contributed.

The starting lineup, consisting of Jalen Brunson, Anthony Edwards, Brandon Ingram, Mikal Bridges, and Jackson, showcased balance, athleticism, length, and versatility. Brunson distributed the ball well, resulting in seven American players scoring in double figures. Edwards provided a spark with 11 points in the third quarter and finished with an impressive two-way performance. Ingram stepped up defensively in Jackson’s absence, while Bridges helped the team maintain its desired pace.

With a bench unit led by Tyrese Haliburton, Austin Reaves, and Bobby Portis, the Americans displayed depth and cohesion. Haliburton’s 12 assists in 21 minutes highlighted his role as a facilitator, while Reaves earned praise from LeBron James for his contributions. Portis brought physicality to the game and energized the crowd.

Although the Americans struggled with their outside shooting, finishing 6 for 27 from deep, their passing and teamwork compensated for it. They recorded 29 assists on 48 baskets and shot 56.5 percent from the field. Defensively, USA Basketball held Puerto Rico to just 37 percent shooting.

After this successful exhibition, USA Basketball will continue its preparations with four additional games in Spain and the United Arab Emirates. Tougher challenges lie ahead, with matchups against Slovenia and Spain, both of whom have gold medal aspirations. These upcoming games will provide a clearer picture of how well the Americans’ game plan holds up against elite competition.

Coach Kerr emphasized the importance of staying focused and not underestimating any opponent. The team understands that one dominant victory does not guarantee success in the next game. They remain measured and poised as they look ahead to the FIBA World Cup tournament in the Philippines.
