Giuliani Frequently Requested Assistance for Legal Expenses from Trump

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and personal lawyer to former President Donald J. Trump, is facing financial difficulties as he tries to collect payment from his longtime client. Giuliani has been seeking millions of dollars he believes he is owed for his efforts to keep Trump in power.

In an attempt to collect the money, Giuliani initially relied on his lawyer, who reached out to individuals in Trump’s circle. However, these efforts were not successful. Giuliani then took matters into his own hands, making personal appeals to Trump during a two-hour dinner at Mar-a-Lago and a private meeting at his golf club in West Palm Beach. Despite these entreaties, Giuliani did not receive the desired financial support.

In a last-ditch effort, Giuliani’s son, Andrew, visited Trump at his club in New Jersey, hoping to have his father’s substantial legal bills covered. This seemed to have some effect, as Andrew asked Trump to attend fund-raisers for the legal bills, and Trump agreed.

Throughout the past year, Giuliani’s team has repeatedly sought financial assistance from Trump as he faces mounting legal expenses from criminal investigations, private lawsuits, and legal disciplinary proceedings related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, Trump has been reluctant to provide significant financial support, despite making a vague promise to pay during their dinner at Mar-a-Lago.

Giuliani currently owes nearly $3 million in legal expenses, and this amount does not account for the money he may be owed for his post-election work on Trump’s behalf. Trump’s political action committee has only covered $340,000 of Giuliani’s legal fees thus far.

Giuliani’s income sources have dwindled, with his WABC radio show providing approximately $400,000 per year, along with some income from a podcast and livestream broadcast. These income streams are insufficient to cover his debts. Meanwhile, a legal-defense fund set up by friends to raise $5 million for him in 2021 has raised less than $10,000.

There is frustration among those close to Giuliani that he has not received adequate financial support despite his loyalty to Trump. Some individuals, including Bernard B. Kerik, blame the lack of payments on those surrounding Trump, who may dislike Giuliani. However, the decision ultimately rests with Trump himself.

Trump has not explicitly explained why he is withholding payment from Giuliani, although he has pointed out that Giuliani lost the election-related cases. Giuliani’s supporters argue that his work went beyond lawsuits and included research and efforts to prevent state legislatures from certifying allegedly false election results. However, Trump insisted that Giuliani would only be paid if he succeeded and eventually approved some expenses.

The effort to collect legal fees from Trump began over two years ago when Giuliani’s main lawyer, Robert J. Costello, began contacting individuals connected to Trump and arguing that Trump was responsible for Giuliani’s legal bills. While some of these individuals expressed sympathy for Giuliani’s situation, the efforts to collect payment have been largely unsuccessful.

Giuliani personally met with Trump in April 2021 at two separate occasions, but Trump remained noncommittal about covering Giuliani’s legal bills and post-election work. Despite a promise made during their dinner at Mar-a-Lago, neither Trump nor his political action committee have provided additional financial assistance.

This turn of events is a significant setback for Giuliani, who was once a multimillionaire due in part to his post-mayoral contracts and his reputation as “America’s mayor” after the September 11 attacks.
