ASHBURN, Va. — Coach Ron Rivera announced that Sam Howell will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders in their season opener. This decision marks the end of a one-sided competition for the job.
Since spring practices began, Howell has exclusively worked with the starters, taking the majority of reps. Jacoby Brissett, who was signed in the offseason, briefly took his place for a few snaps in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Expressing his gratitude, Howell said, “It means a lot. But all my work is ahead of me. This is only the beginning.”
The season opener will take place on September 10, with Washington hosting the Arizona Cardinals.
Rivera revealed that he had a meeting with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard to discuss the situation. They unanimously agreed that Howell deserved the starting role.
“Sam’s performance spoke for itself,” Rivera stated. “Although Jacoby has been exceptional and served as a mentor to Sam, it was clear that Sam had what it takes to be our starting quarterback.”
Throughout the preseason, Howell consistently demonstrated his skills and never gave up his hold on the starting position. In the game against the Browns, he completed 9 of 12 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, during the joint practice session with the Baltimore Ravens, his performance on the first day impressed the coaching staff.
Rivera commented on Howell’s progress, saying, “This is exactly what we expected to see from Sam. He has shown tremendous growth and we have full confidence in him.”
Howell’s decisiveness, ability to progress through multiple options, improved footwork, and decision-making skills have impressed the Commanders. With more experience, they believe he can further develop his game, particularly in the red zone.
Reflecting on his journey, Howell expressed his confidence, stating, “When I step on the field, I’m confident in my ability, the offense, my teammates, and the system. That’s when I can play freely and at my best.”
After drafting Howell in the fifth round in 2022, Washington initially had him as the third-string quarterback. However, due to injuries, he had the opportunity to serve as the primary backup and even started the season finale. His performance and growth throughout the offseason solidified his place as the starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
Rivera acknowledged Jacoby Brissett’s contributions and expressed his confidence in the quarterback room overall.
Looking ahead, Rivera is excited about Howell’s development and believes he is more than capable of leading the team to victory.
