State Pension Compensation Eludes Women Born in the 1950s with Fatal Consequences

In 2021, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, a government watchdog, determined that the Department for Work and Pensions had failed to effectively communicate changes to the state pension age. Despite this ruling, the Ombudsman has yet to provide any recommendations for compensation.

Angela Madden, the leader of the “Waspi” campaign, expressed, “For the 250,000 women who have tragically passed away while waiting for a resolution, justice delayed is truly justice denied.”

The campaign group revealed that approximately 100 women are dying each day in relation to this issue.

Ms. Madden further commented, “The Ombudsman’s investigation has spanned five long years, and it has been two years since the confirmation of the DWP’s guilt in maladministration.”

“To make these women wait even a single day longer for a proper compensation offer is a blatant disregard for all of us,” she added.

Susan Taylor, a 65-year-old woman impacted by the rise in the state pension age, shared her personal experience, stating, “Both my sister and I, born in the 1950s, had our retirement plans completely shattered by the state pension age debacle.”

“I lost my sister to cancer at the age of 59 and I myself was diagnosed with lung cancer at 62. I now have no quality of life and face immense financial pressures. Some days, it is incredibly difficult to envision anything but a miserable end to a lifetime of hard work as we continue the fight for justice for so many women,” she explained.
