Aug. 17 (UPI) — The Boy and the Heron, an exciting new animated feature by the renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, has been added to the lineup of two prestigious film festivals.
The San Sebastian Film Festival has announced that this film will open their 71st annual festival in September.
After the San Sebastian opening gala, The Boy and the Heron will have its European premiere at the Kursaal Auditorium on September 22nd. The film will be screened out of competition.
Hayao Miyazaki is no stranger to the San Sebastian Film Festival, as some of his previous works like Spirited Away, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, and The Wind Rises have also been screened there. However, The Boy and the Heron is the first film by Miyazaki to be included in the Official Selection category.
This year, the San Sebastian Film Festival will take place from September 22nd to 30th.
In addition, Film at Lincoln Center has announced that The Boy and the Heron will be part of the Spotlight selections at the New York Film Festival.
Among the other remarkable Spotlight selections are The Curse by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, starring Emma Stone, Garth Davis’ Foe featuring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, and Trân Anh Hùng’s The Taste of Things starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel.
As previously announced, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla will be the Centerpiece selection at Film at Lincoln Center. Additionally, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro will have its North American premiere at the festival.
The 61st annual New York Film Festival will take place from September 29th to October 15th.
The Boy and the Heron is a significant milestone for Miyazaki, as it’s his first feature film in 10 years. The movie was released in Japan on July 14th and will soon hit theaters in North America.
It’s worth noting that this film has already been announced as the opening night film for the Toronto International Film Festival.
