Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ Quarterback, Aims to Increase QB Sneak Plays: “I Remain Unmatched in Yardage Gains”

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is renowned for his exceptional play-calling abilities in football. However, Reid has become more cautious when dialing up plays near the goal line, due to a past incident involving his star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. In 2019, Mahomes dislocated his kneecap while attempting a quarterback sneak. Since then, Reid has been hesitant to call the play, as he and the coaching staff prioritize the player’s safety.

Despite Mahomes being widely regarded as the best player in the league, he and Reid are committed to avoiding further injuries. Mahomes himself acknowledged the difference in their approach, mentioning how his kneecap was on the side of his leg during the injury. While the team had been successful with quarterback sneaks before, they did not perform well in that aspect last year.

Mahomes clarified that quarterback sneaks are still under evaluation and expressed hopes of improving their conversion rates when the regular season comes around.

During the Chiefs’ preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints, Reid attempted a direct snap to the tight end on fourth down in a wildcat-style play. Unfortunately, the play was stopped for no gain. Mahomes, on the other hand, expressed his desire to take snaps and utilize his physicality in short yardage plays more frequently.

Looking ahead, Mahomes mentioned that he may have to resort to calling his own number in the Super Bowl if given the opportunity, as Reid is unlikely to allow him to do so unless it is for such a high-stakes game.

The Chiefs will open their regular season against the Detroit Lions on September 7th.
