Orange County Register: Sole California City Included in ‘Top Places to Raise a Family’ Ranking

In the midst of a wave of Silicon Valley residents moving to more affordable cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and even Seattle, San Jose has been ranked as the second best area in the country to raise a family by U.S. News and World Report.

Out of the 25 family-friendly locations listed by the renowned news publication, San Jose was the only California metro area included. The rankings were determined based on factors such as cost of living, average salary, quality of high school education, and crime rates, with San Jose’s metro area (including Santa Clara and San Benito counties) standing out due to its exceptional college readiness among high school students. However, the major drawback is the exorbitant housing costs, with the average price of a single-family home exceeding $1.5 million.

The report, which can be found here, points out that the average income in San Jose, at $99,430 a year, is significantly higher than the national average of $58,260. Nevertheless, this provides little solace for families in the region who hope to purchase a home. According to the California Association of Realtors, only 26% of households in Santa Clara County can afford an entry-level home, compared to 55% nationwide.

The astronomical housing prices have led to a decline in San Jose’s population, with approximately 50,000 residents leaving since the start of the pandemic, resulting in a 5% drop in the city’s population. As a result, Austin, Texas surpassed San Jose to become the country’s 10th largest city earlier this year. Despite this decrease, San Jose remains the largest city in the Bay Area with a population of around 970,000 and now ranks as the 12th largest city in the nation.
