Aug. 16 (UPI) — Aldi, founded in Germany, announced its plans to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket from Southeastern Grocers.

Aldi Süd, one of the companies operating under the Aldi brand, is set to acquire the popular supermarket chains in the southeastern United States, expanding its presence in the region. The merger will bring approximately 400 new Aldi locations across five states.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2024. In addition to the acquisition, Aldi plans to open 20 new locations in the area by the end of this year.

Aldi’s origin can be traced back to the Aldi founded by Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946. Following a dispute over selling cigarettes, the business was split into Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord in the 1960s. These two companies have since operated separately but continue to have contractual business relationships.

With the acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, Aldi Süd aims to increase its presence in the United States, where it operates under the Aldi brand name. This move positions Aldi Süd to compete more effectively with its sibling rival, Aldi Nord, the owner of Trader Joe’s.

When the transaction is complete, most of the acquired stores will continue to operate under the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket brand names. However, some locations will be converted to the Aldi format.

Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi’s U.S. division, expressed excitement about serving the loyal customers in the Southeast. He stated, “The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills. The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year, reaching a total of over 2,400 stores by year-end.”

In addition to the Aldi acquisition, Southeastern Grocers plans to sell their Fresco y Mas stores to Fresco Retail Group in the first quarter of 2024. This strategic divestiture is expected to be completed in the first half of the same year.
