EJ Obiena Aims for Perfect Alignment of Stars in Budapest to Secure World Championship Victory

Ernest John Obiena is eagerly preparing for the upcoming World Athletic Championships, determined to secure a top spot on the global stage. While he acknowledges his physical capabilities, Obiena recognizes that the mental aspect plays a significant role in his performance. Additionally, he understands that there are external factors beyond his control that can impact his results.

As a strong contender for the podium, Obiena aims to surpass his toughest competitors, current world champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden and American athlete Chris Nielsen. These two athletes currently hold the top positions in pole vaulting, and Obiena sees the upcoming event as an opportunity to make a statement.

Having previously finished with a bronze medal in the last World Championships, Obiena achieved a milestone for Filipino athletics. Reflecting on his wins and losses, Obiena understands that victories may not always be solely attributed to his own skills, as other competitors may make mistakes. On the other hand, he takes full responsibility for his losses, acknowledging his own errors.

Duplantis, the Olympic champion and world record holder, currently holds the top ranking in pole vaulting with an impressive score of 1500 points. Obiena briefly held the No. 2 spot but dropped to third place after Nielsen reclaimed his position. As the competition progresses, Obiena anticipates making it to the finals alongside other potential medal contenders such as Sam Kendricks and KC Lightfoot of the United States, and Kurtis Marschall of Australia.

Obiena is not alone in his pursuit of medals, as Filipino-heritage athletes Eric Cray and Robyn Lauren Brown will also be competing in Budapest. Cray, a former Asian champion and record-holder, will participate in the preliminary heats of the men’s 400m race. Brown, who recently won gold in the Asian championships, will compete in the preliminary heats of the women’s 400m hurdles.
