Former President Donald Trump and several others, including Mark Meadows, Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeff Clark, John Eastman, have been indicted as a result of a years-long investigation by state prosecutors in Georgia. The investigation focused on their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state. The charges include violating the Georgia RICO Act, solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery, filing false documents, and more. This marks the fourth time Trump has been indicted and he is the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges.
After the 2020 election, Trump reportedly had a phone call with Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which he insisted that he had won the state and urged Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to reverse the results. However, the certified election results showed that Joe Biden won the state by a margin of 11,779 votes.
In the weeks following the election, Trump refused to concede and launched legal challenges. He also allegedly urged states with Republican governors and legislatures to overturn Biden’s victories.
A special grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia released a report detailing findings from the investigation, which suggested that witnesses may have committed perjury in their testimony. The grand jury recommended that prosecutors pursue indictments against these witnesses if the evidence is compelling.
In addition to the charges in Georgia, Trump has also been indicted in separate cases. He faces charges related to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, as well as charges for the alleged improper retention of classified records from his presidency. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
These developments mark a historic moment, as Trump is the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges. However, it is important to note that this is a developing story and updates may follow.
