Exciting Queer Content: Upcoming Releases and New Screenings

Are you feeling down because you can’t find new local shows and movies with queer narratives? Don’t worry, we’ve got some exciting releases this year and new screenings for those you may have missed last year. While not on the list, “Here Comes The Groom” deserves a mention for winning KaladKaren a Best Supporting Actress award at the Summer Metro Manila Film Festival. We hope to see new screenings for it soon. Another notable film missing from the list is the viral sapphic animated film “The Lovers,” which is reportedly slated for release in 2025. Now, let’s dive into where and when you can catch these queer movies and shows.

Currently Showing: “Drag You And Me”
Express yourself through drag, even if you’re not part of the LGBTQ+ community. “Drag You and Me” is a drag-centered show that goes beyond reality TV. It features drag queens Brigiding, Viñas Deluxe, Xilhouete, Precious Paula Nicole, as well as Golden Gays’ Flor Bien Jr. and Rico Reyes. The story follows cisgender Betty (Andrea Brillantes), who joins a prestigious drag competition to save her family’s home and drag comedy bar from repossession. Things get complicated when she falls for her bi competitor Jason (JC Alcantara), much to the jealousy of his drag mother Charlie. Whether you love the love triangle aspect or not, the show’s showcase of drag looks is not to be missed.

Where and when to watch: Currently airing on the iWant TFC website and YouTube channel.

New Screenings: “Where Is The Lie”
Remember the viral Twitter thread in 2020 about transphobic catfishing allegations against a local photographer? “Where Is The Lie,” alternatively titled “Marupok AF,” is based on that story. EJ Jallorina stars as hopeless romantic Janzen Torres, who matches with seemingly perfect Theo Balmaceda on a dating app. When Theo ghosts her on the day of their meetup, the heartbroken Janzen starts uncovering the web of lies and manipulation created by “sociopath” director Beanie Landridos played by Maris Racal.

Where and when to watch: The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival last January and will be available for viewing at the upcoming New York Asian Film Festival on July 22.

New Screenings: “i get so sad sometimes”
Trishtan Perez’s award-winning film “i get so sad sometimes” is about to make its South Korean premiere at the Korea Queer Film Festival. The story revolves around a small-town high schooler named Jake, who secretly spends his nights on the internet with an older man whose face he has never seen.

Where and when to watch: Screenings will be available at the Daehan Theatre in Seoul from July 7 to 9. You can also watch it online on Purplay.

Upcoming Releases: “Rookie”
If you’re tired of hearing “Walang basketball dito eh. Ayaw ng mga madre. Nakaka-tomboy raw,” then “Rookie” is the film for you. Co-written by Antoinette Jadaone’s sister Natts Jadaone and director Samantha Lee, this film offers sporty sapphic representation. It follows the story of an awkward teen (Pat Tingjuy) who is forced to play volleyball in a new school without a basketball team. And yes, the rookie falls for their star player (Aya Fernandez).

Where and when to watch: Premiere at the Cinemalaya Film Festival with screenings from Aug. 4 to 13.

Upcoming Releases: “Drag Race PH” Season 2
Get ready for the return of “Drag Race Philippines” with its beach-themed second season. While the exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s expected to drop around the same time as the first season, which premiered last August. The rumors and speculation about the cast are already circulating on social media, so be careful if you don’t want any spoilers.

Upcoming Releases: “Drag Den” Season 2
After leaving us on a cliffhanger, “Drag Den” will be back with a new den for its queens. Although there isn’t much information available right now, rumors suggest that the show will air again this year, possibly in December.
