Prior to her recent appointment, Ciprian-Matthews held various leadership positions at CBS News. These included serving as the executive vice president and CBS News Washington bureau chief, where she helped elevate high-potential journalists. Additionally, she held roles such as senior vice president of news administration, vice president of news, CBS News’ foreign editor, and senior producer for CBS News’ morning broadcasts.
Throughout her impressive career, Ciprian-Matthews has guided coverage of numerous major news events globally. This includes significant events like the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, bombings of U.S. embassies, wars and bombings in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, liberation movements and the Arab Spring, nuclear challenges from Iran and North Korea, and devastating earthquakes in China, Haiti, and Chile.
Before joining CBS News, Ciprian-Matthews served as the managing editor of CNN’s New York Bureau. She also worked as a field producer, assignment manager, and assignment editor for CNN. Ciprian-Matthews began her career as a general assignment reporter for the National Public Radio Spanish-language news program “Enfoque Nacional.”
Ciprian-Matthews’ outstanding work has earned her numerous awards and accolades. She is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and has received recognition such as the Alfred I. duPont Award for CBS News’ coverage of the Newtown tragedy and the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. In addition, she was honored with the Presidential Award of Impact by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and recognized as one of the 2023 Most Influential Latinos in Media by the Imagen Foundation.
With her accomplishments in mind, it comes as no surprise that Ciprian-Matthews has also been honored by the Columbia University Black Alumni Council with a Heritage Award for service. Furthermore, she has been acknowledged by the community organization Bigs and Littles NYC Mentoring.
Ciprian-Matthews actively contributes to various industry organizations. She is a member of the Paramount Veterans Network and Paramount’s Global Inclusion Advisory Committee. Additionally, she serves on the boards of the International Women’s Media Foundation, News Leaders Association, and the Freedom Forum Institute’s Power Shift Project.
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Ciprian-Matthews received her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in 1981. She later graduated from New York University in 1984 with a master’s degree in journalism.
