Michigan airshow crash: Pilot and crew member escape with minor injuries

During a Michigan air show on Sunday, a vintage jet crashed, but fortunately, both the pilot and crew member managed to escape serious injury by ejecting from the aircraft, according to officials. The incident occurred at the Thunder Over Michigan air show, hosted by the Yankee Air Museum in Belleville. The crash took place a little after 4 pm local time when the MiG-23 demonstration plane, a Soviet fighter, went down into a car park, colliding with empty vehicles at a nearby apartment complex in Belleville, which is approximately 30 miles west of Detroit. Thankfully, no injuries were reported at the apartments or the air show itself.

Although the pilot and “backseater” crew member did sustain some injuries, they did not seem to be of significant concern. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, both individuals were taken to the hospital, as confirmed by the Wayne County Airport Authority.

Marsha Bogardus, who was watching the air show with her children on Belleville Lake, managed to capture the entire crash scene on video. She spoke to the Detroit News, expressing how her children were frightened by the chaotic sights and sounds of the crash, which occurred approximately an hour after the show began. “We heard these huge booms… and saw the two pilots eject,” Bogardus said. “It scared my kids and everyone was freaking out. It dropped like a bullet straight down.”

The Federal Aviation Administration, in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board, will conduct an investigation into the incident.
