James Harden Declares He Refuses to Team Up with ‘Deceptive’ 76ers Executive Daryl Morey

James Harden has publicly expressed his disdain for Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the 76ers. During a press event in China with Adidas basketball, Harden referred to Morey as a “liar” after the Sixers ended trade talks involving Harden. In a video posted by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Harden emphatically stated his refusal to be part of any organization that Morey is associated with. This statement was made in response to a question about the Sixers’ attempt to bring Harden back to the team.

Harden’s displeasure with Morey stems from a reported lack of a long-term max contract offer, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Despite the Sixers’ plans to bring Harden back for training camp, the 10-time All-Star made it clear that he would not stay with the team if Morey remained in a leadership position. The Athletic reported that Harden no longer wishes to play for the Sixers and has no intention of participating in training camp.

While the 76ers had discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers, the team Harden desired to join, no deal was finalized. ESPN sources revealed that Philadelphia’s asking price for Harden was high, and no teams were willing or able to meet it. Harden’s frustration with the Sixers reportedly stems from taking a pay cut last season and feeling left in the dark during the offseason.

During the summer, tensions escalated between Harden and the Sixers when he decided to exercise his player option for the upcoming season while simultaneously requesting a trade. The Athletic reported that Harden was extremely upset with how the Sixers handled his potential free agency, and he made his feelings known to the organization. Despite the strained relationship, the Sixers are determined to reconcile with Harden.

Harden’s arrival in Philadelphia was part of a major deal that sent Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2022, following Simmons’ standoff with the Sixers in 2021. Harden and Morey had previously spent eight seasons together with the Houston Rockets, as Morey had notably traded for Harden from the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012.
