Chris Christie Reveals Trump’s Use of ‘Misdirection’ During the RNC

Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie has expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump will ultimately sign the Republican National Committee’s loyalty pledge, despite Trump’s earlier claims that he wouldn’t. The loyalty pledge, known as the “Beat Biden” pledge, is a requirement for candidates to participate in the first GOP primary debate on August 23. It calls on candidates to support the eventual Republican Party nominee for president in 2024.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” with host Jon Karl, Christie stated that he thinks the RNC would exclude Trump from the debate if he doesn’t sign the loyalty pledge. However, Christie also criticized the pledge, referring to it as “nonsensical theater.” He pointed out that Trump had refused to sign a similar pledge in 2016, questioning how much respect Trump would have for it even if he did sign. Christie has expressed his opposition to the pledge in the past, emphasizing his belief that it is a bad idea.

While Christie hasn’t yet received the loyalty pledge, he expects to see it in the coming week. Several other candidates, including Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, and Vivek Ramaswamy, have already signed the requirement ahead of the debate. Trump, who plans to make an announcement on the pledge soon, pushed back against the requirement in a recent Newsmax interview, stating that there are “three to four people” he wouldn’t support for president.

Christie mentioned to Karl that he wouldn’t be surprised if Trump ultimately signs the loyalty pledge just days before the debate. He noted that Trump thrives on keeping the attention on himself and is skilled at playing misdirection.
