AboitizPower plans to expand Cebu coal plant operations

Aboitiz Power Corp. is considering the expansion of its coal-fired plant in Cebu to increase power generation capacity in the province, according to the company’s president and CEO, Emmanuel Rubio. The 340-megawatt (MW) Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) coal plant in Toledo City may undergo capacity expansion, in addition to the development of a 150-MW liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Naga City. Rubio emphasized the importance of justifying the coal expansion option and ensuring financial feasibility. While there is a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants, the TVI plant has already obtained all necessary permits, including an environmental compliance certificate.

Rubio also mentioned that LNG plants can replace more expensive power plants in Cebu, which currently heavily relies on coal and diesel energy sources. Aboitiz Power Corp. plans to deliver the 1,200-MW capacity to distributor Manila Electric Co. with the assistance of Japanese firm Jera Inc. by 2028 or 2029.
