Review of Punchy Sketch Comedy “Grubby Little Mitts: Hello, Hi” at the Edinburgh Festival 2023

Do you require a captivating framework or overarching concept to successfully promote a sketch show in today’s era? Grubby Little Mitts, a dynamic double-act, appear to have struck gold with their latest offering, Hello, Hi. The show initially establishes two distinct realities: the serene present moment and a chaotic sketch-comedy realm that bursts forth from two boxes at the center stage. This ambitious and whirlwind start sets the tone for Rosie Nicholls and Sullivan Brown’s sophomore show, although they do not choose to sustain this concept throughout the entire performance.

We quickly find ourselves immersed in a series of sketches, where the only connection lies in Nicholls and Brown’s genuine warmth, casual banter between scenes, and, notably, Nicholls’ captivating performance skills. Nicholls shines in several standout scenes, such as one where she gracefully fences around a romantic proposal, entangling herself in countless qualifiers. However, a later solo scene parodying sexist 70s spy novels feels somewhat lackluster.

Like many sketches in this show, including the aforementioned one, a common convention relies heavily on the “reveal-then-blackout” formula. Recent years have spoiled us with sketch shows that push the boundaries beyond this initial setup, and it’s possible that Nicholls and Brown’s skits, while amusing, could have been taken to wilder or more surprising extremes. For example, the sketch about an April Fools’ Day breakup had the potential for such a twist. Nevertheless, the pair maintains a consistently high standard throughout the show, with each punchy sketch fostering a fun exchange with the audience.

Highlights of the performance include a scene exploring Rosie’s conflicting maternal urges and a recurring faux-TV show centered around a sexually frustrated hen. The sporadic nature of these scenes often adds to the humor itself. Inevitably, you can predict the final explosive sketch ahead of time, but this in no way compromises its uproarious, toilet-humor idiocy.

In essence, Hello, Hi is a straightforward sketch show, yet one that is skillfully executed and undeniably appealing.
