Two Adolescents Spent 5 Hours in the Pacific, Ensured Mother’s Comfort

  • A family managed to survive the Maui wildfires by seeking refuge in the Pacific Ocean for five hours.
  • Noah Tomkinson, 19, and his 13-year-old brother Milo, along with their mother, braved the fires by staying in the water.
  • These wildfires have now become the deadliest in modern US history, with a confirmed death toll of 93 individuals.

Two teenage boys and their mother successfully endured the Maui wildfires by spending five hours wading in the Pacific Ocean.

Noah Tomkinson, 19, and his 13-year-old brother Milo Tomkinson, along with their mother, made the decision to evacuate their home in Lahaina as the wildfires approached, as reported by CBS News. Initially fleeing by car, they soon realized they were trapped in traffic and had to come up with a new plan.

Noah Tomkinson explained in a video interview with NBC, “We always kept in mind that we wanted to be close to the water in case things got really bad. We could save ourselves by jumping into the ocean. And that’s exactly what happened.” He added, “If we had crossed the street, we would’ve been in the fire.”

The younger brother, Milo Tomkinson, described being in “survival mode” as they remained in the ocean throughout the night, waiting for rescue.

In videos shared by Noah Tomkinson, their family can be seen standing in the water with the fire blazing in the background and thick smoke filling the air, obscuring the sun.

Noah Tomkinson did his best to keep his family calm and reassured his brother, saying, “You’re going to be OK, Milo.”

According to CBS, their mother eventually became too cold in the ocean, so the brothers huddled around her for warmth. They were eventually rescued by firefighters as the fires subsided.

Noah has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family recover from the loss of their home and belongings in the devastating wildfires.

The death toll from these wildfires, as reported by Maui County, has reached 93. This makes it the deadliest wildfire in modern US history, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in California, which claimed 85 lives.
