Trump Refuses to Sign GOP Loyalty Pledge, Suggests He May Opt Out of Debate

Former US President Donald Trump, who is also a potential candidate for the 2024 Republican Presidential race, made it clear that he will not sign the loyalty pledge required to participate in the first Republican primary debate. Despite meeting the minimum donor and polling thresholds for participation in the debate on August 23 in Milwaukee, Trump stated on Wednesday that he refuses to sign a candidate pledge that commits him to supporting the eventual party nominee, regardless of who they are. In an interview with Newsmax, Trump questioned the necessity of signing such a pledge when there are candidates on the list that he would not support for President. He highlighted the problem with blindly committing to a pledge in those circumstances. Trump has consistently indicated his intention to skip the debates, as he believes there is no benefit in subjecting himself to attacks from rival candidates who trail far behind him in the polls.

On a different note, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is Trump’s closest competitor in the primary field, announced his signing of the GOP loyalty pledge. When asked if he would join the debate, Trump replied that he will reveal his decision next week. Notably, Trump confidently asserted his significant lead over DeSantis, using the nickname “DeSanctimonious” to refer to him. He also claimed a substantial lead over President Joe Biden in the polls. In his previous presidential campaign in 2015, Trump initially refused to sign a similar pledge, but eventually relented. Later, when the Republican field had narrowed down to Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Trump withdrew his commitment to the pledge. When asked in March 2016 if he intended to honor his promise to the party, Trump responded negatively.

In conclusion, Trump’s refusal to sign the loyalty pledge showcases his determination to maintain his independence and not pledge support to candidates he disagrees with. It will be interesting to see his final decision on participating in the upcoming debate, especially considering his commanding lead in the polls.
