Opinion | Why Isn’t There More Vicuña Outrage?

In Washington, amidst a relatively calm summer Friday, there was an unexpected uproar with Donald Trump, Clarence Thomas, and Hunter Biden at the center. These individuals have become embroiled in controversies that seem almost inevitable, harking back to age-old tales of flaws, obsessions, greed, revenge, and complex family dynamics.

The cloud of chaos stretches from the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Court House to the Supreme Court, the Justice Department, and even the White House. ProPublica recently exposed Clarence Thomas’s abominable behavior, shedding light on the luxury trips, his mother’s house, and private school tuition payments all funded by billionaire Harlan Crow. The shocking revelations continue with the latest piece titled “The Other Billionaires Who Have Treated the Supreme Court Justice to Luxury Travel.”

Once upon a time, selling your office brought immense shame. There was a single word for such an outrage: vicuña. Sherman Adams, Chief of Staff under President Dwight Eisenhower, lost his job and tarnished his reputation when he accepted a vicuña coat from a textile manufacturer doing business with the government.
But today, Thomas brazenly disregards the law by failing to disclose gifts from billionaires seeking influence. These gifts not only benefited him but also his wife, Ginni Thomas, who actively supported Trump’s efforts to undermine the government. ProPublica reported that Thomas enjoyed at least 38 lavish vacation destinations, 26 private jet flights, exclusive access to sporting events, luxury resort stays, and an ongoing invitation to an exclusive golf club by the Atlantic coast.

Thomas seems determined to prove that living well is the ultimate form of revenge. He has never truly recovered from his humiliation during the Anita Hill hearings, despite smearing Hill and lying his way to Senate confirmation, thanks in part to Joe Biden. The anger and vindictiveness he harbored after the hearings propelled him to the Supreme Court, overshadowing concerns about his legal abilities and ethical principles under the guise of a rags-to-riches narrative.

Over the years, Thomas maintained his down-to-earth image by embarking on R.V. vacations with his wife to escape the perceived “meanness” of Washington. However, recent revelations from The New York Times revealed that his $267,230 Prevost Le Mirage XL Marathon R.V., which he claimed to have scrimped and saved for, was actually funded by Anthony Welters, a friend who made a fortune in the healthcare industry.

Thomas’s actions are tarnishing the court’s reputation, and along with other ultra-conservatives, he is undermining the fabric of our society, prompting many Americans to rebel against their destructive agenda.

In a hearing on Friday, Judge Tanya Chutkan, presiding over the case against Trump for conspiring to steal Biden’s election victory, wasted no time in asserting the primacy of justice over political campaigns. As she told Trump’s lawyers, they must prioritize the administration of justice even if it restricts Trump’s freedom of speech during political events. The judge also emphasized the need to safeguard witness security and safety, promising to take any necessary measures to protect the integrity of the proceedings.

For Trump, this will be an arduous process as his campaign revolves around the perception that he is being unfairly targeted for political reasons. The judge’s warning directly challenges his narrative. Trump’s warped mindset, influenced by a father who believed one is either a killer or a loser, drove him to concoct a scheme to become the killer — not only to his opponents but to democracy itself.

Trump’s insatiable hunger for attention reminds me of characters from fairy tales like Midas or the ballerina in “The Red Shoes.” They desire something so desperately that they succumb to a destructive path. Trump’s refusal to relinquish the spotlight and his thirst for attention will ultimately lead to his downfall.

Similar to Thomas, Trump is motivated by revenge. Entrusting power to individuals driven by harmful intentions is a dangerous proposition for society.

In an unexpected move, Merrick Garland announced the elevation of the Hunter Biden prosecutor to a special counsel, creating further family drama within the White House. Beau Biden, once the pillar of strength for the Biden family, has now become his father’s hero. This shift is undoubtedly challenging for the troubled Hunter, who may now feel like a zero compared to his brother’s accomplishments.

Joe Biden should have reined in Hunter when he started taking advantage of his father’s positions and connections. However, as a father who has experienced the loss of two children and nearly lost another, the president seems paralyzed when it comes to addressing his son’s actions.

With Hunter’s impending trial and the 2024 race underway, it becomes increasingly difficult for the president to argue that Trump is the sole bearer of legal and ethical burdens. Hunter’s actions are staining his father’s campaign, just as Thomas is tainting the reputation of the Roberts court, and Trump is dragging down the entire Republican Party.
