Impressive Second Half Performance by Barkley, Patmon, and Shavers
Quarterback Matt Barkley displayed exceptional skills in the preseason opener, completing 14 of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Barkley took the field during the second half, replacing Kyle Allen after the first series.
Kyle Allen’s interception and subsequent pick-six had given the Colts a 13-10 lead over Buffalo before Barkley’s entrance.
With Barkley at the helm, the Bills quickly drove down the field. Barkley completed 6 of 7 passes for 75 yards, culminating in a 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, who found an opening on the left side. Buffalo regained the lead, 17-13, and maintained control for the rest of the game.
Explaining his thought process during the touchdown play, Barkley said, “I didn’t want to overthrow him, so I decided to float it up there for him. I knew he had plenty of space after making a great move on the edge.”
Shavers, making his NFL preseason debut, shared his focus on staying calm and present during each play, avoiding succumbing to nerves.
Recalling his touchdown catch, Shavers explained, “I lined up in the left slot and noticed man coverage. I saw that linebacker matched up against me, and I knew the ball was coming my way. I did my best to secure the catch and score.”
