Stay Afloat: Inquirer Opinion

Walking is widely recognized as beneficial for one’s health. There is an inspiring story of a woman who started walking at the age of 65 and continues to do so today. Her dedication to this activity is truly remarkable. Despite all her efforts, she remains elusive.

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 14:22-33), we learn about Peter’s extraordinary feat of walking on water, which quickly turned into a sinking episode due to his lack of faith. It is inevitable for us to experience moments of sinking in our own lives. As we navigate through trials and tribulations, we should follow Peter’s example and turn to the Lord, calling out, “Lord, save me!” Additionally, we should pray for an increase in our faith.

Peter’s ability to conquer his fear and walk on water stemmed from his unwavering focus on the Lord. However, when he shifted his attention to the overwhelming waves and his own insignificance, he began to sink. This lesson teaches us the importance of keeping our focus on the Lord, rather than getting caught up in the burdens we carry.

The words of Jesus, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid,” should resonate with us in the present moment. Let us allow these words to penetrate our hearts and free us from the grip of fear, depression, hopelessness, restlessness, and anxiety. No matter what challenges we face, as long as Jesus is by our side, He will lead us through. Therefore, we must hold on to Him unwaveringly and remain above water, refusing to sink.

The pandemic forced the world to pause and reflect. It served as a transformative moment for everyone, as we started seeking God and truly listening to Him. However, it is crucial to examine whether we have sustained the realizations and resolutions we made during that time. Are we still attentive to God’s voice? Do we still actively seek Him?

Apart from external hardships, it is often the inner demons within us that inspire fear. How do we confront our doubts, fears, and anxieties? The answer lies in trust. Trust the Lord wholeheartedly and worry less. As Proverbs 3:5 advises, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Today, Jesus reveals to us the path to strength: He withdrew to the mountain to pray alone. We, too, should find our personal prayer mountains every day. It is essential to seek the Lord’s presence, making time for Him in our lives to simply be present, be silent, and be still. Without prayer, we risk sinking and drowning. As Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still and know that I am God.”

As for me, I strive to achieve 10,000 steps each day. This not only benefits my body but also nourishes my soul. It provides a moment for refreshment, a dedicated time for “me” and God. During these ten thousand steps, countless thoughts and reflections cross my mind, accompanied by smiles, countless prayers, and the burning of calories.

During a recent trip to Iloilo, I had a heartwarming encounter with an airport security personnel. He proudly showed me a brown scapular hanging around his neck and shared that I had gifted it to him five years ago at the airport. What a testament to his unwavering faith!

A while back, I contemplated purchasing a bicycle for my 70th birthday. However, I dismissed the idea due to unnecessary expenses and the fear of potential falls. To my surprise, a friend named Ric arrived a week ago with a generous gift of ten surplus bicycles from Japan. How little faith I had!

August 15 marks the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. Despite her small stature, she possessed immense faith. She made God greater than herself. Let us learn from her and strive to diminish ourselves while magnifying the Lord. Magnificat!

God has a difficult time dealing with individuals consumed by ego.

Reflect on this statement: “When you choose peace, it comes with a lot of goodbyes” (Unknown).

Let us spend a moment with the Lord and pray for an increase in our faith. May our doubts and pride decrease. Amen.
