Competing Events at the Iowa State Fair Show DeSantis and Other 2024 Rivals Taking Aim at Trump

Former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, both contenders for the Republican presidential nomination, separately campaigned at the Iowa State Fair, but did not interact. DeSantis faced heckling from Trump supporters, who continuously interrupted his fairground tour. DeSantis had planned his visit to the fair weeks in advance, attempting to divert attention from recent setbacks in his campaign. On the other hand, Trump announced his visit to the fair on the same day as DeSantis to overshadow his rival. DeSantis encountered protesters blowing whistles and a plane flying a “Be Likeable Ron!” banner, while Trump supporters chanted “we love Trump” nearby. Trump was the only candidate not to engage in discussions with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who hosted fair side chats with other candidates. When asked about Trump’s absence, DeSantis criticized the former president’s attacks on Reynolds. Furthermore, DeSantis expressed his willingness to support the ultimate nominee and emphasized the importance of team unity. Despite Trump’s large lead in polls, he refused to participate in the first nomination debate and did not commit to attending future debates or sign a loyalty pledge to the Republican National Committee. DeSantis viewed this as selfishness and stated that all candidates should support the nominee regardless of personal interests. At the fair, Trump complimented his own crowd size in comparison to other candidates, ignoring the actual attendance of his rivals. Trump was accompanied by Florida congressional delegates backing him, while DeSantis was supported by Iowa lawmakers. Other candidates present at the fair included Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. Haley noted that Trump’s decision not to join Reynolds was a personal choice, but praised Reynolds as the best governor in the country. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson, long-shot candidates challenging President Biden for the Democratic nomination, also attracted attention from political reporters at the fair.
