Additional seven football players face charges in the ongoing sports gambling investigation at Iowa and Iowa State universities

On August 11, it was revealed that seven current and former Iowa and Iowa State football players have been charged in a state investigation into sports gambling. The charges were filed in Story and Johnson County district courts.

According to court records, Iowa State’s starting running back Jirehl Brock, offensive tackle Jake Remsburg, defensive tackle Isaiah Lee, and tight end DeShawn Hanika are among the latest Cyclones to face charges of tampering with records. These players are accused of attempting to conceal their identity for electronic wagering.

The charges were filed on Thursday. In addition to the Iowa State players, Iowa wide receiver Jack Johnson, former Hawkeyes Arland Bruce IV and Reggie Bracy, and student manager Owen O’Brien also face the same charges. Bruce has transferred to Oklahoma State, while Bracy has transferred to Troy after spending last season with the Hawkeyes.

David Jobes, assistant director of the division of criminal investigation, stated that “The Iowa division of criminal investigation’s special enforcement operations bureau serves as the primary criminal investigative and enforcement agency for gambling laws in the state of Iowa and investigated alleged violations of Iowa law related to sports wagering at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.”

The investigation is still ongoing, and no further information can be released at this time. The charge of tampering with records carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine of up to $8,540. According to NCAA guidelines, student-athletes who violate sports wagering rules will be ineligible for competition, subject to appeal to the committee on student-athlete reinstatement.

Earlier this month, Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers and several other current and former Cyclones and Hawkeyes athletes were charged with tampering with records related to the state probe into sports gambling. All of those charged are accused of manipulating transactions to show that the bets were made by other people.

In May, Iowa State and Iowa announced that gaming officials were investigating 41 student-athletes on allegations of prohibited online sports gambling. Iowa State said in a statement that they have been actively working to address these issues with the involved student-athletes, and the process remains ongoing. They will continue to support their student-athletes as their compliance staff works with the NCAA to determine their future eligibility for athletics competition.

Troy announced on Thursday that Reggie Bracy has been suspended from team-related activities in response to the allegations. None of the Iowa State players charged have been participating in practice.

The Cyclones are scheduled to face Northern Iowa in their season opener on September 2 in Ames, while the Hawkeyes will host Utah State on the same day in Iowa City.
