Safety Measures at Hollywood Shelter Bring Approximately 45 Homeless Individuals Indoors

City officials announced on Friday that approximately 45 homeless individuals have been relocated to nearby motels as part of an Inside Safe encampment operation in Hollywood. This operation, which targeted an encampment outside of Larchmont Charter School on Selma Avenue, marks the 24th operation of its kind in the city.

The Inside Safe initiative, a collaboration between Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez, aims to bring people off the streets and out of encampments, while also working to prevent the reemergence of such encampments.

“We are dedicated to tackling the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles on a daily basis, and we will not relent,” stated Mayor Bass. “Inside Safe continues to provide housing and services to those who were living on the streets or in encampments.”

Soto-Martinez mentioned that his team has been working for months to secure housing for the individuals in this specific encampment. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the mayor’s office, service providers, and county partners to assist more people in finding permanent housing.

Supervisor Horvath, who chairs the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority commission, expressed the commitment of local government agencies to bring unhoused individuals inside and connect them with necessary services.

According to the mayor’s office, the Inside Safe initiative has successfully housed over 1,400 individuals in Los Angeles.

Prior to this initiative, Mayor Bass had declared a state of emergency in order to expedite the construction of affordable and temporary housing. She also aimed to maximize the use of city-owned properties for both temporary and permanent housing solutions.

On August 2nd, the Chief Administrative Officer presented a report to the L.A. City Council’s Housing Committee, providing updates on the city’s homelessness spending and metrics related to Inside Safe.

The report revealed that as of July 27th, Inside Safe had served 1,463 homeless individuals and placed over 1,105 of them in interim housing. However, only 8% of Inside Safe participants (108 individuals) had successfully transitioned into permanent housing. It is important to note that the accuracy of this data may be subject to improvement, as the city and LAHSA continue to enhance their data collection efforts.
