When Trunk, the popular Japanese brand, opened its first hotel in Shibuya in 2017, it offered a peaceful escape with its Western-influenced rooms and serene color schemes. The hotel also featured a rare communal lobby space, where locals and tourists could work or enjoy drinks together. Trunk’s newest property, set to open on September 1st, is designed to direct guests’ attention outward, towards the beautiful Yoyogi Park. With balconies in every room and a rooftop pool club, the hotel aims to not only attract visitors to the vibrant district, but also provide a serene space to unwind and admire the views. The hotel’s design, led by renowned architect Keiji Ashizawa and interior company Norm, incorporates warm wood elements and beige textures, while the restaurant will serve comforting Italian cuisine. In 2022, I had the privilege of visiting the home of Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Robert Crumb, a famous comic artist couple, in the south of France. Sadly, Aline passed away from pancreatic cancer shortly after our meeting. Aline was often seen as the more personable one in their work, which often focused on their relationship. In one of their comics, Aline is portrayed calmly vacuuming the house while maintaining a positive outlook, while Robert expresses his paranoid thoughts. The couple’s contrasting personalities make their work truly captivating. As a tribute to his late wife, Robert created a yoga mat featuring art based on a flier he had made for one of Aline’s fitness classes. Entrepreneur Wan Di and his business partner James Park have collaborated to create Guilder’s Gin, a small-batch label of tea leaf-infused gin. The name Guilder’s Gin pays homage to the merchant guilds in the 19th century who smuggled tea out of Canton by pouring it into spirits bottles. Wan Di spent a year sampling over 300 different teas before settling on the flavors and consistency found in leaves harvested at two family-owned farms in Taiwan. Guilder’s Gin offers three varieties: Green Tea gin, Red Oolong, and a classic blend called Canton Dry. The brand will be available at select New York restaurants and retailers, with plans to offer online purchases in the future. Prices start at $45.
Elisabeth Holder and Celine Kaplan, two style enthusiasts, have founded the brand OOOF. Inspired by their love of travel and a desire for spontaneity, OOOF offers a range of eclectic items, from clothing to accessories to home decor. The brand’s first collection features small 18-karat-gold charms shaped like a diving mask and snorkeling flipper. Each charm is handmade in TriBeCa and costs $750. Future releases will include ceramics and upcycled embroidered shirts. The duo emphasizes that their brand follows no strict calendar, but instead operates on intuition and inspiration from their travels.
Rukpong Raimaturapong, a fashion designer originally from northeastern Thailand and now based in Paris, has created a collection that captures the essence of Bangkok after dark. Collaborating with Baan Krua silk-weaving community, a centuries-old tradition in the city, Raimaturapong designed limited-edition shirts, pants, and accessories under the name Light Life. The collection features two-tone patterns inspired by Bangkok’s vibrant neon lights, as well as striped silk sourced from local fabric stores. The garments draw inspiration from the uniforms of street sweepers, messengers, and market workers who emerge at night. Prices start at $172.
