New ProPublica Report Reignites Dems’ Demand for Clarence Thomas Resignation and Supreme Court Ethics Reforms

According to ethics experts, Thomas may have violated the law by failing to disclose flights, yacht cruises, and expensive sports tickets, despite not needing to disclose stays in personal homes.

Four other House Democrats, including Pramila Jayapal, Bill Pascrell, Gerry Connolly, and Hank Johnson, have also called for Thomas’ resignation.

Jayapal criticized Thomas for accepting undisclosed gifts from billionaires, calling it “unprecedented,” “stunning,” and “disgusting.”

POLITICO’s request for comment from the Supreme Court’s Public Information Office went unanswered.

Senate Democrats have introduced legislation to reform the Supreme Court’s ethical guidelines and increase transparency, but its passage is uncertain.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a supporter of the bill, expressed his belief that the situation will worsen following ProPublica’s report.

Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin wrote that the latest revelation of unreported gifts to Thomas shows a “shameless lifestyle” funded by wealthy benefactors.

ProPublica’s report adds to previous findings of unreported gifts received by Thomas, including luxury vacations, private jet and yacht trips, and tuition payments for a relative.

Thomas previously defended accepting personal hospitality from friends without business before the court, stating that he received guidance that it did not need to be reported.
