Tragic Incident in Texas Cornfield Claims Lives of Three Individuals and a Dog

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas – Tragedy struck earlier this week in Bastrop County when three individuals and their faithful canine companion lost their lives after becoming trapped in a cistern.

The victims have been identified as Delvys Garcia, aged 37, Denise Martinez, aged 26, and Noel Vigil-Benitez, aged 45, all residents of Florida.

The Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call around 1 a.m. on Wednesday from a witness reporting that three people were stuck in a hole in the ground in the 300 block of New Trails.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered what appeared to be a partially filled underground cistern, emitting strong septic tank-like fumes.

According to a press release from BCSO, a hunting party comprised of three males and one female ended up in a cornfield after their dog fell into the cistern.

“One of the members of the hunting party attempted to rescue the dog by entering the cistern. It appears that two additional members then entered the cistern to rescue the first person. Meanwhile, the fourth member rushed to his truck to seek help and call 911,” the press release stated.

Unfortunately, with the water level below the small opening of the cistern at ground level, escape was impossible, leading to the tragic deaths of the three individuals and their loyal canine companion.

Recovery efforts were hindered by the fumes, stagnant water, and the precarious condition of the cistern. To facilitate the process, the decision was made to drain the water and remove the hydrogen sulfide gas from the cistern.

“An attempt was made to dig beside the structure and gain access from the side near where the bodies were located. However, this approach was abandoned due to the risk of weakening the walls and compromising safety,” the press release explained.

D. Newman, a first responder with BCSO, bravely volunteered to descend into the cistern once the fumes and water had been extracted. By 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, he successfully recovered the bodies of the victims and their precious dog.

An ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances that led to the victims’ presence in the cistern, while autopsies have been ordered for all individuals involved.

BCSO provided photographs of Martinez and Vigil-Benitez, but a picture of Garcia is not currently available.
