Orange Cat Becomes an Official Member of Malaysia Zoo After Being Adopted by Capybaras

  • An orange cat has become the star attraction of a Malaysian zoo after being adopted by a group of capybaras.
  • Oyen the cat is so beloved that his presence at the zoo sometimes doubles the number of visitors.
  • Zoo Negara believes that Oyen was abandoned in 2020 and has officially made him part of the enclosure.

A feral ginger cat has taken center stage at Malaysia’s national zoo ever since it joined a group of capybaras.

Oyen, the cat, has become a major draw for visitors at Zoo Negara, with weekend crowds doubling in size. According to Rosly Rahmat Ahmat Lana, the zoo’s vice president, “Every day, 95% of the visitors are here just to see Oyen. He is very popular.”

The exact date Oyen entered the capybara enclosure is unknown, but zookeepers believe he was abandoned at the zoo during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rosly told Free Malaysia Today, “Unlike before, Oyen is now docile and approachable. Should Oyen fall ill one day, it will be easy for us to hold and treat it.”

Oyen has gained viral fame on social media, particularly through videos of him lounging and cuddling with the capybaras, who seem unfazed by their feline companion.

In June, Zoo Negara formally introduced Oyen as part of the enclosure, adding his name to the exhibit. The zoo plans to provide Oyen with food and medical care, and hopes to find him a partner to establish a cat bloodline that is inclined towards capybaras.

Capybaras, known as the largest rodents in the world, have gained popularity on the internet in recent years due to their calm nature and laid-back demeanor, becoming the subject of countless viral memes.

Zoo Negara has not yet responded to requests for comment.
