Hollywood writers resume negotiations with studios at bargaining table

LOS ANGELES—Hollywood’s writers’ union is set to resume negotiations this week following a request from studios to find a solution to the ongoing strike, the guild announced on Thursday, Aug. 10.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since early May, causing a complete halt in the entertainment industry. However, formal talks between the two parties over issues such as pay have not yet resumed.

In an email to its members, the WGA confirmed that it has accepted a meeting with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which includes major studios like Disney and Netflix.

“We anticipate the AMPTP’s response to the WGA’s proposals,” said the email from the negotiation committee, seen by AFP.

“Our committee is prepared to negotiate a fair agreement, with the full support of the unified WGA membership and the continued backing of our union allies,” it added.

Last month, the strike escalated when screen actors joined the writers on the picket lines. Both groups are demanding better pay, restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence, and improved working conditions in their collective contracts.
